Heading further south of Tasmania

Geeveston – is a forest town, and about 28 kilometres inland via Arve Raod is the Harzt Mountains National Park where there are Beech Rainforests, Keogh Falls, Arve Falls and the Tahune Forest AirWalk – a suspended walkway through the top of the forest and to the River where you will be 48 metres above it.

Dover is south of Geeveston on Port Esperance with the three islands in the Port called Hope, Faith and Charity. This is a small fishing village with boat ramps, a golf club, picnic areas and a nice village atmosphere.

Southport – is located next to a large Bay originally called the “Baie des Moules” (mussels Bay) by the French Explorer, Chevalier Bruni D’entrecasteaux in 1792 – no doubt due to the Mussels he ate here. The Town also became a Convict Probation Station from 1841 to 1848, and then a whaling and Timber Port. Little remains from those early days, but the village is close to Hastings Dolomite Caves and the thermal springs pools – both worth seeing, and Gem fossicking areas.

Head on Lune Bay Road to Lunaris (175 Lune Bay Rd) to see lots of gemstones, and to 328 Lune Bay Road to the Ida Bay Railway Tramwww.idabayrailway.com.au a narrow gauge railway with a 1940’s Malcolm Moore Diesel engine that pulls two small carriages to take you on 7 kilometre long journey beside the Bay to Deep Hole Bay where there are picnic grounds. A walking track then takes you to Southport Bluff Beach and Southport Lagoon which is a conservation bird watching area.

Recherche Bay, Catamaran and Cockle Creek are further south of Ida Bay – with walking tracks leading even further south to South Cape Bay and beyond. At Cockle Creek you can see the large whale sculpture beside the Bay.
